by Kathleen Spike, MCC, CCAC

This summer I spent 5 days on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands training with Joel and Michelle Levey, world-class meditation trainers.  They call themselves meditation mongrels, which means they do not subscribe to any certain dogma or style of mediation.   They have practiced with the Dalai Lama and many other great mediation trainers in the world.  I received a broad view of what meditation is and how to use it to improve daily happiness and health. One can actually lower blood pressure during meditation or prayer, if the mind is quiet.

I learned how to quiet a too active mind.  As a personal coach, I am probably above average in managing my mind, or at least being aware of the mind and its need to be managed, yet I came home with such deep awareness and skills in slowing down my body to almost a stand still and knowing how slowing down the body slows down the mind and its racing and chatter.  Quiet mind skills create a synergy or receptive opening for the active and creative mind skills to bring forth your potential, ideas, intentions and truth for you.

How do you quiet the mind?  It is not like dreaming, slowing down and watching television or taking a nap.  Instead, it requires focused awareness of every motion you make at the speed of almost zero.   Stop and practice walking at almost zero speed.  Notice your heel touch the floor; imagine the 150 bones in your feet operate effortlessly without you even thinking them into doing so.  Walk across the room totally focused on each movement of each step.  This focus “quiets” the racing mind and disciplines it to stay focused on one thing even if it lasts just as long as crossing a room. This begins your practice of quiet mind.  Your body, your organs, your health will love it.  Give it at least one try.  Slow down your walking, talking, body movements.  Quiet your mind!

Check out their book called: SIMPLE MEDITATION AND RELAXATION by Joel and Michelle Levey.  They use easy language novices can understand.  It is loaded with compassion, love and truth.   Quiet your mind so you can access your active creativity!
