Seven Steps to Playing Bigger in Life
by Kathleen Spike, MCC, CCAC

Nelson Mandela
1997 Inaugural Speech

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves,
"Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous"?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you.

We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It is not just in some of us: It is in everyone.

And, as we let our light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others".

RECLAIM YOUR DIVINE POWER AND ENJOY IT!!!!!

Let’s reflect on Nelson Mandela’s words. If your deepest fear is that you are powerful and it is your God given power that you are afraid of, take an assessment of yourself to find out what is blocking you from it. Take some time and write down your answers. Begin by breathing, get out of your "thinking" self and into your "soul’s code."

1. Where do I play small, and shrink myself?  When and with whom?

2.  Who asked me to play so small? Be careful on this one. The "asking" may not have been direct. Most of the asking is hidden messages, innuendo, your own assumptions, unspoken pressure and of course overt demanding.

3.  What do I get out of accepting the "playing small" role? Food, water, roof over my head, love, approval, acceptance into social groups????? Make your list.  Every action you choose to take has a payoff.  What is it?

4.  It I were going to play 10 times bigger than I do now, where would I go, what would I say, who would I be with, how would I look, what would I have, how would I feel?

Mandela said, "As you let your light shine, you unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others". He also said, "If we continue to take an eye for an eye, eventually we will all be blind!"

Love your neighbor as yourself. What does that mean to you? For most people I come in contact with it means to love your neighbor, assist your neighbor, loan things to your neighbor, be pleasant to your neighbor, pray for your neighbor, support your neighbor and on and on. However, I believe we didn’t hear the entire message. It said, "Love thy neighbor AS THYSELF!"

5. Make a list of how you love yourself, how you see yourself, how you are as a person in your home, family, community and the world. Do you feel any resistance coming up in doing this assignment?

What I want you to see is how little attention you give to your own personal greatness, brilliance, power, and beauty. How little you have been allowed to love yourself and how uncomfortable you are with identifying your power. Now, make that list of your assets, your greatness and your accomplishments. Coaches take clients "back home" to THEMSELVES so they can love others more fully, create more authentic existences and relationships and be powerfully authentic

6. Make a list of all you need to fully take care of yourself.

Now that you see the words on paper, pick two self-care priorities of which you will begin to focus your intention on.

7. Tell someone you trust. Doing so will make it real and hold you to a higher intention. It may take months to master them without coaching support (*), however, a beginning is a beginning. The purpose is just to begin. Remember that you cannot love another fully, without judgement and assumptions until you first love and care for yourself. Out of extreme self-care you will access the ability to function powerfully in your world.

(*)  Every day, a growing number of people choose to work with a professional coach.  Why?  The reasons are numerous, but one of the top ones is that working with a coach accelerates the progress one can achieve.
